Baronesa da Lagoa Dourada Street, 234 – Center – Campos dos Goytacazes – RJ - 28035-200.

History of the building

"The properties I have on this date are: one farm, with a fully furnished house, in which we live, located on Praça do Pinheiro, on the corner of street Gil de Gois, on a plot of land that stretches to street Salvador Corrêa – a plot of land that faces Praça do Pinheiro, streets of Constituição and Gil de Gois, and farm number 97."

It was thus that the Baron of Miracema, a citizen of Campos dos Goytacazes, started writing his private diary. The Baron was a doctor of the Emperor Pedro II and later was elected senator of the Republic of Brazil. The first entry in the diary was written of the first day of the 20th century. It was in this farm that the house owned by Dr Atilano was built and offered as a present to his wife, Dona Finazinha.

Dr. Atilano Chrisóstomo de Oliveira, engineer, started making fortune after studying overseas. When he came back to Brazil, he established a shop to manufacture sugar cane mills, in Beira Rio, Campos. After all, the region was a main sugar cane, sugar and syrup producer.

In 1907 he was the owner of two sugar production plants, Mineiros and São Pedro do Paraíso. It was then that he married the young Finazinha, daughter of Benedito Queiroz and Thereza Linhares Tinoco Queiroz, owners of a bank located on Praça São Salvador, site of the current Banco do Brasil branch in the city. In 1918, the construction of Villa Maria is finished, a set of constructions built in an eclectic style, which was given as a present to Dona Maria Queiroz de Oliveira by her husband, Dr. Atilano.

The links below direct you to some more history of the building.

An overview of Dona Finazinha's life

On the 2nd of November 1887, Maria Tinoco Queiroz was born, daughter of Benedito de Azevedo Queiroz and Thereza Linhares Tinoco de Queiroz. Maria graduated as a teacher in the local teaching school, located in the building of the Liceu de Humanidades de Campos. On the 6th of April 1907, at the age of 19, Maria gets married to the engineer Atilano Chrisóstomo de Oliveira. With him, she would have only one daughter, Alice, who would die very young, preceding her mother, who by then was a wealthy widow. Alice did not have children and therefore D. Finazinha did not have any heir to her estate. But she had a brother, Abelardo, and a sister, Carmelita, with whom she did not keep a close relationship, since they grew apart due to her strong and temper prone to perfectionism.

Finazinha was given this name because she was born on Dia de Finados, or All Soul's Day, but was known as Queen of Generosity, due to her kind character and noble spirit. She was always willing to share her belongings with the poor. Every year, at Christmas, long lines formed at the gate of Villa Maria, waiting for presents given by Dona Finazinha. The Queen of Generosity helped several philanthropic an social assistance organizations, and she also became the patron of the students of the Liceu de Humanidades de Campos, of the Associação de Imprensa Campista and of the Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro. D. Finazinha also sponsored recitals of music bands organized in these institutions, even in her own home.

Having died on the 18th of December, 1970, at the age of 83, Dona Finazinha bequeathed Villa Maria, which was to become the main building of the Presidency of the University that was to be established in Campos.

Twenty-three years after her death, on the 8th of December 1993, her house would become the Casa de Cultura Villa Maria, main building of the Presidency and cultural center of Darcy Ribeiro State University of Northern of Rio de Janeiro.
