The Plant Genetic Improvement Laboratory (LMGV) is organized into four sectors, as described below:<\/p>\n
Plant Breeding:
\nResearch in this sector focuses on the breeding of cultivated plants, including fruit crops\u2014particularly papaya, passion fruit, guava, and forest species; major crops, with emphasis on maize, popcorn maize, and common bean; and vegetable crops, especially bell pepper, chili peppers, and sweet corn.<\/p>\n
Genetic Resources:
\nThis sector is dedicated to the introduction, characterization, and evaluation of genetic resources of species of regional interest. It is also responsible for the conservation of the studied accessions.<\/p>\n
Applied Genetics:
\nThis sector uses molecular markers and cytogenetics as auxiliary tools in plant breeding procedures. Studies are conducted at the DNA and chromosomal levels, as well as on plant reproduction, encompassing research on genetic diversity, gene mapping, and gene analysis, among other topics. These studies are integrated with traditional plant breeding methods, such as recurrent selection and backcrossing.<\/p>\n
Plant Physiology:
\nResearch in this sector emphasizes the ecophysiology of tropical and subtropical plants, plant metabolism, and postharvest physiology. Studies focus on papaya, guava, passion fruit, grapevine, popcorn maize, and coffee plants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
