UENF is located in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, (Leonel Brizola Campus) about 300 km from the city of Rio de Janeiro. The area was originally inhabited by the Goitacá Indians. Campos dos Goytacazes was the first city in Latin America to receive electric light in public lighting, in 1883, a year before the city of Rio de Janeiro. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Campos dos Goytacazes has an approximate population of 510,000 inhabitants in 2020, being the seventh most populous city and the municipality with the largest territorial extension in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The city is crossed by the Paraíba do Sul River, one of the largest and most important in southeastern Brazil. Campos dos Goytacazes has a Historical Museum, Trianon Municipal Theater, Villa Maria Culture House, Municipal Garden and important public and private universities. The city ranks tenth among the most populous municipalities in the interior of Brazil. On its coast is the largest oil platform in Brazil, the P-51 in the Campos basin. The climate is tropical (Aw) with an average temperature of approximately 24° C and an average annual rainfall of 1000 mm, with a rainy summer and dry winter.

UENF has a campus in the city of Macaé (Carlos Alberto Dias Campus) about 90 km from Campos dos Goytacazes, comprising the Petroleum Engineering and Exploration Laboratory (LENEP) and the Meteorology Laboratory (LAMET). The city of Macaé is known as the “National Oil Capital”, where Petrobras (Brazilian oil, gas and energy company) and companies in the offshore sector are located.

The main UENF campus has a restaurant, departments libraries, nursery, social workers support, sports courts, a convention center, a bank branch (Bradesco Bank), a cafeteria and a veterinary hospital. UENF also has a cultural center, “Villa Maria Culture House”, which is located downtown Campos dos Goytacazes.  The Villa Maria Culture House is open to the public and regularly promotes cultural activities.
