PhD and Master’s programs in Biosciences and Biotechnology

The Postgraduate Program in Biosciences and Biotechnology at the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro (UENF) – also known as the State University of Northern Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro – prepares students for both Master’s and PhD degrees. Since its inception in 1994, PGBB has awarded PhD degrees to 242 graduates and Doctors and Master’s degrees to 476 graduates  (updated on 06/03/2025).

  • Admission to the Postgraduate Program in Biosciences and Biotechnology (PGBB), which offers both Master’s and PhD degrees, usually takes place through a selection process in November. The announcement, along with the rules and details, is published in a specific Selection notice in September or October each year. The selection process includes an interview, research project presentation, curriculum analysis, and an English proficiency test. Candidates are required to contact a potential advisor to obtain a letter of acceptance and to prepare a research project proposal.

Admission for the first semester of 2026: The call for applications for the selection process or Master’s and PhD programs will be published in September 2025.

  • The program includes courses and a research project. The academic year is divided into two semesters: the first semester typically runs from March to July, and the second semester from August to December.

  • The research conducted is distributed among the research lines of the two main research areas:

AREA I – CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR PLANT AND ECOSYSTEM BIOLOGY Research Lines:

1. Cellular Biology, Ecophysiology, and Ecosystem Health (ECOCEL)
2. Plant Biology, Microbiology, Food Safety, and Sustainability (BIOAGRO)
3. Systems Biology, Big Data, and Multiomics (BIOSIS ECO)
4. Phytotherapeutic Molecules and Compounds of Relevance to Animal and Human Health (FITMED)
5. Epistemology and Education in Bioethics, Biosafety (EPIBIOS ECO)

AREA II – BIOTECHNOLOGY & CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY IN HEALTH Research Lines:

1. Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (BIONANO)
2. Biology of Vector Arthropods (VETART)
3. Systems Biology, Big Data, and Multiomics (BIOSIS)
4. Epistemology and Education in Bioethics and Biosafety (EPIBIOS)
5. Immunobiology, Parasitology, and Infectious Diseases (INFECT)
6. Allostatic Mechanisms – Biophysics, Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular (MECMOL)
7. Neurosciences and Cellular and Organic Regeneration (NEUREG)
8. Virology, Oncology, and Molecular Cardiology (VOCMOL)
